Navan DitchEXPLORING THE MYSTERY OF NAVAN FORT (EMAIN MACHA)

Take a fully guided walk of the fort of Emain Macha.  Experience the full mystery, folklore and history of one of the most remarkable Celtic monuments in the world.

Explore this five hectare mysterious site where archaeologists have discovered traces of a giant temple - the largest prehistoric building in Britain which was erected for the purpose of ritual destruction and burial beneath the mound we see today.

Your guided tour will take you round the outer circumference of this almost perfect circle, walking its massive banks and ditches of the low circular earthwork before climbing to the highest point "the mound".

On the mound your Guide will relay the early Irish legends known as the Ulster Cycle which centre around King Conchobar who ruled from Emain Macha.  Legends which have inspired writers and artists such as Yeats, Synge, Lady Gregory and Louis le Broquy.

Bring a pair of binoculars with you and enjoy the panoramic views from the mound also, if the Irish weather is favourable it is an ideal place to have a group picnic.

This tour is a real experience for those interested in the mix of archaeology, mythology, religion and history on this site - something which sparks a note of curiousity in many visitors to the Island of Ireland.

Navan DitchOur local Irish guides have a wealth of experience in this field and are very keen to share their heritage with you.

We recommend that you allow approx 2 - 3 hrs to enjoy this tour.  We also recommend that those wishing to undertake this tour are reasonably fit and able as the walk takes us over some uneven surface and also uphill.  It is also adlvisable that you wear suitable outdoor footwear and clothing.

An extended tour to the nearby sacred waters known as the King's Stables can also be arranged.  The King's Stables is a very tranquil area with an artificial pond thought to have been used for sacrificial purposes.  Many Bronze Age pieces have been found in this pool.  A visit to the King's Stables would involve a short five minute bus ride followed by a short walk to the pool.  Unfortunately as this site is situated on one of our narrow roadways only a small coach can reach it however, if the group is keen and fairly fit we can walk to it!

Have a look at some pictures taken on Sunday 18th February 2007 - pictures which will give you some idea of the extent of the site and its terrain.

If you are interesting in bringing a group on the above tour and wish to discuss it with us further do not hesitate to contact Barbara  -
